Indications:
The test provides information that assists the doctor in the diagnosis of patients with swallowing difficulties and gastro esophageal reflux disease. Oesophageal Manometry is also used for evaluation prior to surgery.
Esophageal manometry is a test that measures the function of the esophagus and the characteristics of the valve between your esophagus and the stomach. It records the muscle pressures and coordination of activity in the esophagus. It can evaluate the action of the muscle waves (peristalsis) in the main portion of the esophagus, as well as the muscle valve at the lower end of it (the lower esophageal sphincter, or LES).
Procedure:
A thin pressure-sensitive probe is passed through the nose, down the oesophagus and into the stomach. A numbing medication is used to desensitize the nasal passage to provide some comfort to the patient for the duration of the procedure. The patient is required to swallow 6-10 sips of water, during which the pressure of the muscle contractions (upper oesophageal sphincter, oesophageal body and lower oesophageal sphincter) is measured along respective and various sections of the probe. Once the study is complete, the probe is removed, and the data is interpreted. Please note you will remain awake for the procedure.
- Complications of this procedure are exceedingly rare, with the most significant being esophageal perforation.
- Sometimes your nose may bleed or a stuffy/congested nose, and you may have a sore throat or mild heartburn for one to two days after test.

- Book a study date and time.
- Obtain authorization for the procedure from your medical aid.
- Carefully read through pre-procedure information provided.
Day before procedure:
- Do not eat/drink after 22h00, the night before your surgery, unless otherwise specified by your surgeon or anaesthetist (you should be fasting for at least 6 hours before the procedure for solids but you are allowed to take clear liquids up to two hours before your procedure).
Day of procedure:
- Arrive for your procedure, at the Midstream consultation rooms, at the indicated time on ‘Code & Consent’ sheet.
Approximately 25-45 minutes.
Activities:
- You may return to your normal daily activities after the procedure.
- We will be in contact with you with the results of your oesophageal manometry study.
